Ossian Capitel 2022

95 Points - Robert Parker. Capitel is the flagship wine from the magnificent Ossian Vides y Vinos, arguably Spain’s greatest white wine producer. The Capitel is made from the estate’s oldest vines, some of which are believed to be 200 years old, from a tiny, organically farmed plot at Peña Aguda, in Nieva.  Over the years, the roots have penetrated the slate sheets beneath the surface and extracted a rich mineral strength from them.  This packs the tiny berries with concentration and complexity. Once fermented, the Capitel is matured in oak vats in the coolness of the old Monastery of El Parral, during which time it gains yet more depth and a creamy, nutty tone that is the perfect foil to Verdejo’s natural freshness. While it drinks brilliantly when young, it has the distinction of being a Spanish Verdejo that can age magnificently.

Wine Press Ratings

95 Points - Robert Parker (2022 Vintage)

96 Points - Guia Penin (2021 Vintage)

"Color: bright yellow. Aroma: ripe fruit, spicy, white fruit, citrus fruit. Flavour: balanced, fresh. Style: taut. Aroma: powerful, creamy oak, ripe fruit, spicy. Flavour: rich, good structure, long, toasty, fine bitter notes."

Taste

A slightly nutty and full-bodied expression, with a creamy and spicy edge to the roasted pineapples and roasted cashews. Waxy in texture, but bright and zingy, with mouthwatering acidity that cut through the intense flavours. From organically grown grapes. James Suckling, 92/100

About the Producer

Founded in 2005, Ossian Vides y Vinos owns 40 hectares of exceptional vineyards in Nieva, the highest point in the Rueda appellation at altitudes between 840 and 930 metres of above sea level. Its most prized asset is its vines which are not only incredibly ancient being between 100 and 200 years old, but a are pre-phylloxera and planted on their own rootstocks. The phylloxera louse devasted most of Europe’s vines in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but thanks to having soils comprised largely of sand, Ossian’s survived. Organically farmed, the tiny amount of fruit these vines produce is phenomenally concentrated and makes Ossian what it is, one of Spain’s greatest white wines.
