Domaine Tortochot Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux 2022

You may not have heard of the Champeaux Premier Cru, but once you've tasted it you'll wish you had sooner. Champeaux is the northernmost Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru vineyard. Its rocky limestone and clay soils are nutrient-poor and free draining which makes it ideal for growing Pinot Noir. The vineyard faces east which means vines are exposed to morning sunshine but shaded in the afternoon. This, and the soils, gives wines of great structure and longevity. The glorious 2022 vintage imparted an extra ripeness and richness to Domaine Tortochot’s wine, yet it has retained its vibrancy and elegance.

Taste

The Domaine Tortochot Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux 2022 has a gloriously deep, cherry red colour. The bouquet balances red berry freshness with darker tones of blackberries, cherries, and vanilla smoke. Mouth-filling and intense, on the palate it combines raspberries and strawberries with cherry, damson and loganberry notes offset by cream and oriental spices. Built to last, the tannins are rounded and sweet, and help create a fine, elegant red Burgundy.

About the Producer

Domaine Tortochot is an important and highly regarded producer based in the northern Burgundy village of Gevrey-Chambertin. Family-owned, fourth-generation Chantal Tortochot is now in charge of the domaine, and it was she who made the move to organic viticulture back in 2013. Their 12 hectares of Pinot Noir vines are spread across 34 plots, including ones in the Grand Cru vineyards of Mazis-Chambertin and Charmes-Chambertin. In an area best known for its powerhouses, Domaine Tortochot is notable for the elegance of its wines.
