Chateau Palais Cardinal La Fuie Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

Product image 1

Chateau Palais Cardinal La Fuie Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

In common with all the leading properties in Saint Emilion, Chateau Palais Cardinal produced an exceptional 2022. Given 92/93 points from James Suckling, the 50-year-old vines allow Nicolas Ballande to produce an outstanding wine. In many ways the 2022 was the result of work that was started in 2008. It was then that this ancient estate was given a new lease of life after years of underperformance. The winery was completely overhauled with outdated presses and vats being replaced by state-of-the-art temperature-controlled fermentation tanks and investment made in barrels the buildings to create the perfect environment for the crafting of wines that were worthy of its prestigious terroir. The vineyards were also attended to. Organic methods were introduced leading to their wines having HVE 3 and Terra Vitis certification since 2019, yields have been reduced, and far greater attention has been given to soil and vine health. Thanks to all the Ballande family’s hard work, Chateau Palais Cardinal is now fit to rank amongst the best Saint Emilion Grand Crus, yet it remains affordable. Well, for now at least.

Vivino Rating: 4.2 (Jan 2025)

Taste

The Chateau Palais Cardinal 2022 offers a knockout combination of power and finesse, richness and delicacy, fruit and complexity. Inky purple-red, it’s only now after four years in bottle that it is revealing its ample charms. The nose offers a wondrous combination of spiced plums, blueberries, chocolate, coffee, and woodsmoke. The velvety palate is suffused with tones of plums, black figs, cherries, blackberries and vanilla which coat the mouth revealing firm but rounded tannins that point to long ageing potential. The finish is minerally, plump, and shot through with raspberries that add freshness and balance.

About the Producer

Chateau Palais Cardinal estate is located in the commune of Saint-Sulpice de Faleyrens which lies to the south of Saint Emilion next door to the acclaimed Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé Château Monbousquet.  The terroir is a wonderfully free-draining, nutrient-poor mix of gravels and sand which are drained by the ‘La Fuie’ stream which lends its name to the label.  It takes its name from the sumptuous residence built in the 12th and 13th centuries, renamed “Palais Cardinal” when it was enlarged in the 14th century by Cardinal Gaillard de la Motte. Its combination of exceptional terroir and old vines makes it one of the richest and longest-lived of all Saint Emilion Grand Crus.
