Paul Wallace Off The Record Syrah 2022
90 Points - IWSC. The 2022 Off the Record Syrah marks the third vintage of this remarkable wine, crafted from a small parcel of Shiraz grapes grown on a truly exceptional site. Nestled high on the Ceres Plateau, this vineyard is rooted in nutrient-rich Bokkeveld shale soils and thrives at an extraordinary altitude of 1,000 metres above sea level. One of the rare South African vineyards blanketed by snow in winter, it produces grapes of remarkable character and intensity. With only 3,960 bottles released, this is a wine as rare as its origins.
Vivino rating: 4.2 (Jan 2025)
90 Points / Silver Medal - International Wine & Spirit Competition (2022 Vintage)
"Bright and lively aromas of fresh red bramble fruit with a hint of herbs leads into a juicy, light palate showcasing gentle tannins and a delightful freshness. The finish is clean, balanced, and refreshingly straightforward."
Wine Press Ratings
βOne of those serendipitous discoveries that puts a smile on your face for the rest of the day, this is a remarkable new release from Bobby Wallace that rates among the best Syrah in South Africa.β Tim Atkin, MW
Taste
The wine has an attractive deep red hue. The nose leads with appealing spicy aromas - white pepper supported by notes of both red and black berries, some violets and a hint of garrigue. Dark fruits follow through onto the palate with an appealing juicy entrance supported by savoury white pepper notes, a touch of salinity and rounded off with fine subtle tannins. A wonderful example of high altitude Syrah.
About the Producer
Over the last four years, brothers Mark and Bobby Wallace have joined forces in an exciting collaborative venture, giving life to their own wine project. What started as a humble attempt to fashion wines for their personal enjoyment and that of their friends has since blossomed into a fresh and innovative wine label. Their journey has been fuelled by an unyielding desire to seek out distinctive vineyard locations. The first offering under their "Off the Record" label is an Elgin Chenin Blanc, a true rarity in a region with limited Chenin Blanc vineyards.
