96 Points - Patricio Tapia - Descorchados (2021 Vintage)
"From Sagrada Familia, a warm zone surrounded by the coastal mountains, but from the cool 2021 season, this Caballo Loco has a base of 70% cabernet franc planted in 1900, a genuine Chilean viticultural treasure. And in this Caballo the franc offers outstanding aromas of tobacco and herbs, spices and red fruit. The palate is nervy and delicious, with fine, firm tannins, and red fruit and spice flavors, along with some mint. The two years of barrel aging have contributed spices, but the fruit—or rather the varietal character of these old cabernet franc vines—takes center stage in this superlative wine from a zone that doesn’t usually offer this kind of freshness and tension."
94 Points - Decanter (2021 Vintage)
"Sagrada Familia is a warm area in Curicó ringed by mountains; old-vine Cabernet Franc planted here in 1900 makes up 70% of this blend. Really peppery aromas (black and white), plus notes of tobacco, beef consommé and attractive red fruit. The cooler 2021 vintage lends freshness and a nervy tension to the palate, with minty fruit, graphite, dark chocolate and white pepper, plus spice from two years in barrel. Firm but fine tannins and a long finish. Impressive."

Taste
Wonderfully deeply coloured, the Caballo Loco Grand Cru Sagrada Familia 2021 has a complex bouquet that blends fresh red berries, black cherries, smoke and a touch of mint. On the palate its full, weighty, complex and exotic. Flavours of cassis, peppered strawberries, cherries, earthy spices, and loganberries are all on show, their concentration and energy typical of the outstanding 2021 Curicó vintage. The structure is firm, but everything is in proportion and the tannins are fine-grained and polished, while the acidity is cleansing but not obtrusive. Lovely now with red and brown meats, cow’s or sheep’s cheeses, or tomato-based dishes, a couple more years in bottle will see it mellow into a fine solo sipper.
About the Producer
Valdivieso is one of Chile’s oldest wineries with a history dating back to 1879 when Don Alberto Valdivieso founded Champagne Valdivieso S.A., the first sparkling wine house in South America. It was only in the early 1980s, however, that they turned their expertise to still wines and it now ranks amongst Chile’s finest and most-awarded wine producers. The combination of exceptional vineyards, a talented winemaking team headed by New Zealander, Bett Jackson, and an unflinching commitment to quality has made Valdivieso a producer whose wines are well worth seeking out.
