Settlement Poplars Vineyard Chardonnay 2021

93 Points - Cameron Douglas, MS. A wonderful Burgundian style Chardonnay from a producer who carefully select fruit from Marlborough's top organic single vineyards to produce wines of great elegance and complexity. A polished, complex nose that leaps from the glass. Bursting with appealing grapefruit and peach aromas with complex notes of toasted sourdough, popcorn and white pepper lees influence. The most impressive thing about this wine is the poise, balance and restraint on the palate. It's tasty and concentrated but with a very fine texture and vivacious, saline acidity.

Wine Press Ratings

93 Points - Cameron Douglas, MS (2021)

"Deep straw with some flashes of gold and a silver shimmer lead to a bouquet of intensity and richness, barrel spices and ripe stone fruit scents. Aromas of roasted peach and vanilla, baked apple and clove, a dry stone mineral quality and gentle lift from the alcohol. Lots of weight and creaminess as the wine touches the palate, dry with layers of wood spice and fruits flavours that reflect the bouquet, plus grapefruit and a touch of pineapple. A decent acid line and warming alcohol extend the finish and complexity. Well made with best drinking from 2024 through 2029."

Taste

Mixed citrus fruit is complemented by attractive hints of pip and stone-fruit. A complex underlying richness is kept in check by the wines balance and freshness.

About the Producer

Owner, Steve Planthaber, grew up in the Barossa Valley, surrounded by vineyards and the wine industry from a young age. On leaving school he found his way to the deep south of New Zealand to study chemistry and work for some of New Zealand’s largest companies in a variety of roles. A move to Marlborough with his partner Kirsty Sutherland cemented his love of wine, and after 12 enjoyable years working for Cloudy Bay Vineyards in production and operations, he decided to use his diverse skills and experience to relish the opportunity to form his own wine brand, Settlement.

At Settlement, they carefully select fruit from Marlborough's top organic single vineyards to craft four wines - Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot Noir. These wines, sourced from renowned sites in the Wairau and Southern Valley, benefit from the region's organic farming practices. With minimal intervention in the winery, the purity of the fruit is preserved, resulting in elegant, complex wines.
