Montes Alpha Carmenere 2022

93 Points - Wine Review Online. Textbook expression of Chile’s signature grape from Montes. Sourced largely from vineyards in Colchagua Valley, it shows the estate’s knack for producing polished, characterful reds that deliver both depth and drinkability. Generous, smooth and packed with flavour, it’s a reliable benchmark for modern Carmenère.

Taste

Deep ruby in the glass, with aromas of ripe blackberry, plum and black cherry layered with notes of dark chocolate, sweet spice and a hint of tobacco. The palate is supple and full-flavoured, with soft tannins, a touch of mocha from oak ageing and a fresh, rounded finish. Classic Carmenère with plenty of richness and easy charm.

Wine Press Ratings

93 Points - Wine Review Online (2022 Vintage)

"It seems we don’t see enough of Carmenère in the U.S., even though the grape does so well in Chile, just as its fellow Bordeaux prodigal brother, Malbec, does in Argentina. And, with its 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, it could easily be mistaken for a Left Bank Second Growth Bordeaux wine in taste and style. It is rich, warm and slightly creamy with rich dark berry flavors and undertastes of chocolate and carbon. A very nice buy, especially for the price."

About the Producer

Founded in 1987 by Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, Montes helped put modern Chilean fine wine on the map. From their base in Colchagua Valley, the estate built its reputation on ambitious, high-quality reds that showed the world what Chile could do beyond the classics. Today, wines like Montes Purple Angel remain benchmarks — bold, polished and consistently among the country’s most sought-after bottles.
