De Toren Private Cellar The Black Lion Shiraz 2021
It’s a bold claim to say a wine – especially a Shiraz – is unlike anything you have ever tasted, but in the case of the De Toren Black Lion Shiraz, it happens to be true. As De Toren puts it, ‘The Black Lion wine is the heirloom of years of winemaking in De Toren’s continuous quest for perfection’. Planted on ancient soils with specially selected vines and nurtured by hand manicuring and individual attention, nothing is left to chance. Irrigation is kept to a minimum and the vines are treated organically out of respect for the environment and to nurture the grapes’ natural beauty. With up to 40% of the grapes being removed before ripe and with rigorous selection post-harvest, well under 1,000 cases of the Black Lion Shiraz are made each year, and it is delivered in this stunning presentation case.
Vivino Rating: 4.5 (Oct 2024)
Taste
Drinking the Black Lion Shiraz 2021 is an incredible experience. While it has all the power and intensity for which Shiraz is so renowned, the level of nuance, the concentration and the sheer variety of flavours and sensations set it apart. Inky blue-black with a crimson rim, the bouquet offers everything from cassis and raspberries to tar and espresso by way of green peppers and tamarind spice. Monumentally proportioned, it doesn’t feel heavy or ungainly, but the mighty weight of black fruits, spices, herbs, earthy minerals, and juicy acidity are all in proportion, giving it a harmonious balance. Capable of decades of development, if drinking now give it several hours open in and serve with filet steak or a truffle risotto.
About the Producer
De Toren acquired their first vineyards in 1991 and have redefined the Bordeaux wine concept in South Africa. Their aim was to create an environment where vines produce flawless fruit and then guard these grapes as they are gently steered from vineyard to cellar to bottle. Fastidious about all aspects of production, when it comes to the Book 17 nothing is left to chance, and quality trumps quantity every time so that just 1,200 bottles are produced. This is one of the many reasons why the Book 17 of De Toren Private Cellar has won numerous international awards including ‘South Africa's Best Luxury Wine’ as well as gaining the highest ever score for a South African wine from Wine Enthusiast.
