De Toren Private Cellar Book XVII 2021

No South African wine is as revered or acclaimed as the Book 17 of De Toren Private Cellar. This Western Cape wine is produced from a classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The vines are planted on poor, free-draining soils which force them to dig deep into the sand and granite soils in search of nutrients, reducing the vines’ vigour and imparting complexity. Once they have reach optimum ripeness, the grapes are hand-harvested and rushed to the press house. Here they are meticulously sorted before being fermented in stainless steel. In common with the great Bordeaux Grand Cru wines it takes its inspiration from, it’s given extended oak ageing before release. Regal and majestic, the Book 17 of De Toren Private Cellar is a sublime wine, delivered in this stunning presentation case.

Vivino Rating: 4.6 (Nov 2024)

Taste

De Toren Book XVII Private Cellar 2019 is a full-bodied red wine with a silky texture and surprising levels of delicacy. The opulent bouquet boasts crème de cassis, fruitcake, fig, cassis, and woodsmoke. Darker fruits come through on the palate – stewed plums and backed blackberries - which is layered with a rich graphite minerality, rounded by a touch of sweet spice nutmeg and underlying vanilla. The finish is smoky, with touches of liquorice and clove, the tannins well-integrated, and it remains powerful to the end.

About the Producer

De Toren acquired their first vineyards in 1991 and have redefined the Bordeaux wine concept in South Africa. Their aim was to create an environment where vines produce flawless fruit and then guard these grapes as they are gently steered from vineyard to cellar to bottle. Fastidious about all aspects of production, when it comes to the Book 17 nothing is left to chance, and quality trumps quantity every time so that just 1,200 bottles are produced. This is one of the many reasons why the Book 17 of De Toren Private Cellar has won numerous international awards including ‘South Africa's Best Luxury Wine’ as well as gaining the highest ever score for a South African wine from Wine Enthusiast.
