Caballo Loco Grand Cru Apalta 2023
The Caballo Loco Grand Cru Apalta is one of the best Chilean red wines you can buy. The flagship brand of multi-award-winning Valdeviso winery it is crafted from a blend of old vine Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and Syrah in the renowned Apalta region of Chile's Colchagua Valley. Apalta grapes are highly prized by fine wine producers. The region’s Pacific-cooled Mediterranean climate is ideal for producing grapes that are complex, aromatic, fresh-tasting and well-balanced. The poor (apalta means ‘poor soils’ in the local dialect), free-draining alluvial soils and low rainfall naturally reduces yields and by forcing vines to work hard, increases concentration levels even further. The Caballo Loco Grand Cru Apalta is drinking beautifully now but will repay cellaring for another 5 -10 years.
Vivino Rating: 4.3 (Aug 2025)
Taste
The Caballo Loco Grand Cru Apalta has an attractive deep ruby colour with red-pink highlights at the rim. The bouquet is led by the Cabernet which offers powerful aromas of cassis and green peppers before the Carmenere and Syrah add touches of blackberry, cherry and chocolate. These wonderfully complex, harmonious, notes continue onto the full-bodied, silky palate where they are joined by fresh blueberries, toasty vanilla and a twist of black pepper. Enjoy this refined, full-flavoured wine with red meats, strong cheeses and tomato-based dishes.
About the Producer
Valdivieso is one of Chile’s oldest wineries with a history dating back to 1879 when Don Alberto Valdivieso founded Champagne Valdivieso S.A., the first sparkling wine house in South America. It was only in the early 1980s, however, that they turned their expertise to still wines and it now ranks amongst Chile’s finest and most-awarded wine producers. The combination of exceptional vineyards, a talented winemaking team headed by New Zealander, Bett Jackson, and an unflinching commitment to quality has made Valdivieso a producer whose wines are well worth seeking out.
