Wine Press Ratings

93 Points - Cameron Douglas MS (2021 Vintage)

"A youthful, vibrant and varietal bouquet filled with scents of savoury plum and dark cherry, some violet and dried herb then baked red apple skin, red fruit tea and smoky wood spices from barrel ageing. A youthful wine touches the palate with a distinctive earthy, dried herb and red fruits profile. The tannins add a lot of texture and accentuate the savoury tones in the wine, acidity is fresh and youthful and carries the fruit flavours smoothly throughout the palate. A young wine that needs more development and settling time to fuse together all the bolder, louder attributes"

96 Points - New Zealand Wine Rater (2020 Vintage)

"Interesting, aromatic, savoury nose with notes of damson plum, dark berry, forest floor, nori, peppercorns, salami and salted, black liquorice. Medium-bodied, with plush fruit but still a seriously structured wine with layered tannins. A dynamic, complex wine built for the long haul."

94 Points - Wine Enthusiast (2020)

"A lovely, layered bouquet of bright black and red currant, strawberry, spice, florals and a meaty nuance opens. The elegant palate is seamlessly put together with supple, spiced fruit and well-structured chalky tannins. A mineral thread runs quietly beneath. It's lucid and ready to drink now but could age for several more years."

Taste

Lifted aromas of dark red and black fruits over a savoury, richly textured palate. A fruit profile and structure that shows the benefits of increasing vine age.

About the Producer

Owner, Steve Planthaber, grew up in the Barossa Valley, surrounded by vineyards and the wine industry from a young age. On leaving school he found his way to the deep south of New Zealand to study chemistry and work for some of New Zealand’s largest companies in a variety of roles. A move to Marlborough with his partner Kirsty Sutherland cemented his love of wine, and after 12 enjoyable years working for Cloudy Bay Vineyards in production and operations, he decided to use his diverse skills and experience to relish the opportunity to form his own wine brand, Settlement.

At Settlement, they carefully select fruit from Marlborough's top organic single vineyards to craft four wines - Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot Noir. These wines, sourced from renowned sites in the Wairau and Southern Valley, benefit from the region's organic farming practices. With minimal intervention in the winery, the purity of the fruit is preserved, resulting in elegant, complex wines.
