Orin Swift Machete 2021

92 Points - Decanter. Orin Swift Machete, an iconic Californian red, artfully blends Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Grenache from Napa and Sonoma, aged for 10 months in French oak for vanilla-spiced depth; and layer upon layer of complexity. A full-bodied lover's delight with dominant dark fruit aromas, raspberry-plum-chocolate flavours, medium tannins, and a smooth, lasting finish—perfectly paired with grilled meats, cheese, and charcuterie.

Vivino Rating: 4.2 (Mar 2025)

Wine Press Ratings

92 Points - Decanter (2021 Vintage)

"A proprietary red blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Zinfandel aged 14 months in 40% new oak. Rich, meaty with power and intensity, blackberry, Chambord, with long, crisp tannins and chocolatey spices through a very powerful and drying finish. In need of a good decanting as that will release the flood gates of black fruit, herb, and brown spice aromatics and flavours. An opulent and decadent wine imbued with pleasure meant to be enjoyed now almost on its own or with equally rich and hearty dishes."

Tasting Note

Black ink that coats the glass and transforms it into an altered state, the 2021 Machete opens with decadent aromas of blue and black fruits, charred meat, a hint of funk and troves of minerality. The entry is more dense than expected with notes of black plum, other stone fruits and essence of game but yet tempered and balanced by candied orange peel and leveled acidity. Typical tannins for this Petite Sirah-based wine, the wine closes with voluptuous texture and intensity.

About the Producer

The history of Orin Swift Cellars dates back to 1995 when on a lark, David Swift Phinney took a friend up on an offer and went to Florence, Italy to spend a semester “studying”. During that time, he was introduced to wine, how it was made, and got hooked. A few more years of university led to graduation and eventually a job at Robert Mondavi Winery in 1997 as a temporary harvest worker. Deciding that if he was going to work this hard, it would eventually have to be for himself, he founded Orin Swift Cellars in 1998; Orin is his father’s middle name and Swift is his mother’s maiden name. With two tons of zinfandel and not much else, he spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself and grew the brand to what it is today.
