About Mar de Frades

In 1987, a bodega was established at a location called Mar de Frades, which translates to "Sea of Friars" in Galician. This spot lies opposite the ría Arousa, near the mouth of the river Umia, where ancient pilgrims used to disembark on their way to Santiago de Compostela. The founders of the bodega were drawn to this particular area in the ocean, facing their vineyards, and were inspired by the style of the Atlantic.

Their primary objective was to create wines that would embody the personality and character of the surrounding region. Over the years, Mar de Frades' journey has closely paralleled that of the D.O. Rías Baixas, which came into existence the following year. The bodega was a trailblazer in the Val do Salnés, representing the deep-rooted winegrowing traditions of the area, where the legend of Albariño originated and Spain's most refined and elegant white wines are produced.
